Both The Fairy Ring and Wild Boy have movie versions, made before I wrote either book. (So alas, I have not become fabulously rich.)
The movies are called Fairy Tale: A True Story and The Wild Child (L’Enfant Sauvage).
Some questions for classroom discussion:
- How do the movie girls differ from the real Elsie and Frances? Are the fairies “real” in the movie? Do the movie girls actually fool anyone? Who is the hero of Fairy Tale: A True Story? From whose point of view is the movie story told? (FYI background: The brother in the movie story did not exist in real life. And in real life, Houdini played no role in the Cottingley Fairy story.)
- Who is the main character in The Wild Child? Do you think it is the teacher, or the boy himself? Why?
- From whose point of view is the story told? What do you think of the ending? Is it happy from the teacher’s point of view? Is it happy from the wild boy’s point of view?
